Instead of being defensive, seek positive interactions with your colleagues, even if they are mostly white and\/or male. You have every right to be there. If you ever feel discriminated against, speak out professionally. Dispel the myth of the \u201cangry Black woman\u201d by being open, assertive, and communicative like any model employee.<\/p><p><strong>Find a Mentor, Be a Mentor<\/strong><\/p><p>You are not the first to face discrimination, nor will you be the last. Utilize professional networks and build connections. Find someone who has been in your shoes and learn from their experiences. A mentor can significantly aid your career advancement. Once you\u2019ve gained some work experience, consider mentoring young Black women starting their careers. Share your insights, stories, and advice to help them succeed \u2013 your guidance will be invaluable.<\/p><p><strong>Expand Your Network<\/strong><\/p><p>Most of your colleagues will accept you for who you are and recognize that you belong. Gain their appreciation by being a great listener and remembering small details that make a difference, like birthdays or sending get-well notes. Congratulate peers on their accomplishments. Building these relationships makes work more enjoyable and can lead to positive referrals for the future.<\/p><p><strong>Work Hard and Know Your Worth<\/strong><\/p><p>You\u2019ve likely heard the saying, \u201cTo be noticed, you have to be twice as good.\u201d While office politics and favoritism can be frustrating, respond to subtle discrimination by continuing to produce quality work. Your efforts will eventually be noticed by those who matter, leading to stellar references. Even if you feel undervalued, the most important thing is to know your worth and believe that perseverance will pay off.<\/p><p><strong>Climbing the Corporate Ladder<\/strong><\/p><p>Success stories of Black women rising to executive positions and even CEO roles are plentiful. There is no reason you can&#8217;t join their ranks if you approach your work with the right mindset and don\u2019t let workplace discrimination bring you down. You have just as much opportunity as anyone else.
